Microsoft Intune: ensure successful endpoint management

Your users have successfully enrolled their devices in Microsoft Endpoint Manager. Your devices meet the compliance requirements, and your users can access corporate resources securely, no matter their location.

But endpoint management is not a ‘set and forget’ solution. There is more to the platform than enrolling devices and enforcing compliance policies.

So, what should your next steps be? Reporting dashboards in your endpoint management solution enable you to track device health, compliance, security and updates.

These dashboards give you a complete picture of the devices attached to your organisation in real time so you can update, patch and manage them.

Microsoft Endpoint Manager (which includes Intune, Configuration Manager, Autopilot, and Azure Active Directory) offers dashboards and reporting features to effectively monitor your devices and create reports for various aspects of endpoint management.

Reporting in Microsoft Intune

Microsoft Intune delivers reporting on device compliance, health and trends, which you can leverage when monitoring your devices and troubleshooting issues.

You can customise and filter reports to show only the information you need at that moment or that which is most relevant to your organisation.

The reports available in Microsoft Intune enable you to gain insights into how users leverage their devices and take action to improve device management in your organisation.

You can export and share these reports with the relevant people. If you need to send reports regularly, you can establish a schedule for emailing specific reports to relevant parties.

You can connect Microsoft Power BI and Intune to generate detailed reports, dashboards, and insights about your endpoints.

Intune provides information about devices and users, including activation and compliance status, device type, operating system, app inventory, and security status. Power BI then delivers real-time updates and enables you to generate reports on demand.

What Microsoft Intune reports on

Microsoft Intune offers several reports for various aspects of endpoint management, including the following.

  • Device compliance reports show the status of compliance policies for your devices. These reports also show if device compliance on a specific device has changed.
  • Device configuration reports show successfully configured devices and the number of devices that experienced errors.
  • Firewall reporting indicates whether the firewall on a device is enabled, disabled or limited.
  • Microsoft Defender shows whether a device is scanning for threats and any threats found during the scan. If Microsoft Defender detects an issue, the report will show the malware’s name, category and the severity of the breach.
  • Windows update reports show the status of completed updates on your devices.

Endpoint analytics

Endpoint analytics is a specific report that Microsoft added to support hybrid work. It is a platform for ensuring the functionality of your devices and applications and scoring your readiness for remote work. Endpoint analytics includes the following reports:

  • Proactive remediation reports show problems within your devices so that you can quickly resolve the issue.
  • Recommended software delivers suggestions for improving the software and applications on your devices.
  • Startup performance shows how long it takes devices to boot up and how much time they spend on each step.
  • Application reliability reports on the application versions installed, how often they crash, and any differences in reliability between versions of the Windows OS.
  • Work from anywhere gives you a score that demonstrates your readiness for remote work. It shows the version of the Windows OS installed and cloud management, identity and provisioning.

Accessing reports

You can access reports in Microsoft Intune by clicking on the ‘Reports’ tab and selecting the desired report from the list. It is pertinent to note that this tab does not include all reporting data available via Intune.

Different report types become available in other sections of Microsoft Intune, so you can find data more specific than what is in the ‘Reports’ tab. You can export all reports as CSV or PDF files.

Dashboards

The dashboard is the main reporting feature that visualises current and historical data sets. In Microsoft Intune, your dashboard provides an at-a-glance view of your devices and the status of your compliance settings.

The dashboard offers limited opportunities to customise the information. You can re-arrange the tiles available in the pre-configured dashboard but you do not have a lot of choices if you would like to add more tiles.

Regardless, re-arranging the dashboard provides an easy way to view only the data most relevant to your organisation.

You can also customise the reports to show data sets from a specific date range.

For example, the dashboard provides you with an overview of device compliance. It also shows details on specific devices or groups of devices.

You might want to see which devices are not compliant with your security policies and investigate the causes. You can then take the necessary steps to re-align those devices with your company policies.

Report types

Operational

Operational reports in Microsoft Intune provide detailed information about the status and health of endpoints in your organisation. They help you quickly identify and troubleshoot issues with your endpoints. There are three types of operational reports: device, user, and scan.

Organisational

The Organisational reports in Microsoft Intune provide detailed information on how your organisation uses devices and features.

Microsoft Intune generates reports on various organisational topics, such as device adoption, feature usage, licensing, and security posture.

Historical

Microsoft Intune enables you to view historical reports of your endpoints. This can be very useful for troubleshooting or tracking down issues that have arisen in the past on your endpoints.

The historical reports show data for a specific period of time or information from all time periods.

Advanced

Advanced reporting in Microsoft Intune enables you to create custom reports from raw data. This type of reporting is largely for administrators because it allows you to configure alerts and customise dashboards however you prefer, among many other functionalities.
